think about in the near future, we have our hand-free, the mic is hearing people speaking and we have a instant translate to hear, like a real interpretor always stand by. and we speak, the mic reconginze our voice and the phone start to translate and speak.
but those are technical stuff. the most important thing is, we no long need to be troubled by language. we can speak and understand people, no matter what language they speak. and this greatly improve the international cooperation, and also preserved the identity of different people.
imagine if we have all our english lessons, spend on other things, like math, physics, computer, art, writing, reading, sport, etc... i think i can get a phd when i was 20.
and don't forget there are many books and ideas never get translated!
i am so sure to say, a translator is the most important invention in 21 century. great impact on human society, and it can be compare to the invention of paper and printing. human will once again go to another revolution, and new phase of Enlightenment.
the inconvenient is just a moment. think about the steam engine when Watt first invented. it is too bad that it is easy to broken, it need people to maintain, its power output not even better then a horse! but after a while, steam engine start to to replacing horse, to deliver cargo, transport people that cannot be imagine by using horses. Now, we have alot of engines everywhere, not horses.
i am sorry for those who spend their whole life in study language. may be time for you to not just study it, but do research on it.
language should be just a tool to express ourself, not a purpose.
